So far we have found 11 ships hidden on the right side of the Melencolia print. And here’s the 12th!
WHERE IS THIS SHIP?
This 12th ship is found in the print above the Melencolia’s right foot, which is the one closest to the tongs showing from under her dress. Once again it is extremely foreshortened and is heading almost directly towards the viewer.
The yellow oval outlines the contours of this ship, excluding the front mast.
The blue arrow points to the mast of the ship.
The yellow arrow points to the top of the mast, which is topped by a sic pointed Jewish star. It is very difficult to see that this is a six pointed star and not a 5 pointed star because of the foreshortening.
WHY 12 SHIPS?
Since we know that everything in this print regards Jewish subjects, the most natural correlation of “12” of anything naturally makes us think of the 12 tribes of Israel of the hebrew bible. We also realize that these ships are escaping something to somewhere, so the Duerer’s would be indicating all of the Jewish people that was existent in Europe in 1514 or before, both the Sephardim and the Ashkenazim.
More surprises to come.
