American Tourists High Fine for Vandalizing Rome’s Colosseum

Two American women have been reprimanded for vandalizing Rome’s Colosseum. The pair aged, 21 and 25, carved their initials into the stone with a coin and took a selfie with the damaged wall. If charged, the women could face a sizable fine.

The majority of the six million people that visit the Colosseum every year are well behaved, however, and despite several signs in Italian and English informing visitors that defacing the ancient site is strictly prohibited, tourists routinely cause damage to the historic monument.

A spokesman for the Special Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage of Rome told the Guardian that visitors view the Colosseum differently from other heritage sites. “There’s a difference in perception. Museums are treated like churches, sacred places where there are things of great value. Whereas the Colosseum is an incomplete building which has already been robbed.”

Roman centurion impersonator Antonio Camertoni lamented, “It’s a piece of cultural heritage. They don’t do it at home, but they do it here.”

Danish holidaymaker Johnny Hansen called for harsh penalties, “Everyone should have respect for it,” he said. “They should be fined to make an example. It’s heritage, so you must protect it.”

Some have argued that vast number of visitors makes it almost virtually impossible to prevent a minority of disrespectful visitors from damaging the Colosseum. Recent funding cuts have also made it harder to catch rule-breakers.

The Colosseum is currently undergoing a €25 million ($34 million) refurbishment, funded by the luxury group Tod’s

HILARIOUS! 32 TON ART VAGINA TRAPS SELFIE TAKER

An American student waiting for firefighters to free him from Fernando de la Jara’s marble vagina sculpture, Chacán-Pi (Making Love), at Germany’s Tübingen University.

It seemed like a great photo op, but a dare ended in embarrassment for an American student who got trapped inside a large sculpture in the shape of a vagina at Germany’s Tubigen University.

Firefighters were called to the scene, where, they were told, someone was “stuck in a stone vulva.”

Freeing the young man, whose name was not been released, from the 32-ton red Veronese marble monolith took no less that 22 firefighters (and five fire trucks), as well as paramedics. The rescuers required no special equipment, and were able to extricate the student from the sculpture by hand, creating a surreal, oversize delivery room scene, with the artwork giving birth to a full-grown (though perhaps a little immature) man.

Erick Guzman, a fellow student, posted photos of the incident on Imgur, saying “I was there!!! He just wanted to take a funny picture.”

Tübingen’s mayor found it difficult to comprehend how such a ridiculous accident could have occurred, “even when considering the most extreme adolescent fantasies, To reward such a masterly achievement with the use of 22 firefighters almost pains my soul,” he added.

Despite the undeniably humorous nature of the incident, said Guzman, “The fire department was not really amused, and [the student] was really embarrassed.”

A 1504 engraving by Albrecht Durer worth $600,000 and a 1634 etching by Rembrandt worth an estimated $20,000 to $30,000 have disappeared from the Boston Public Library’s print collection — and could have been missing for up to a year before police were notified. Here’s a look at what we know:

Look at this nonsensical timeline being reported! The Durer found missing in June 2014! Yet no one says a word to mgmt! Gee, the inside perpetrators needed time to figure out how to fence, not an easy thing to do unless had already been set up to go to auction house who will sell your grandmother. A couple of Adam and Eva’s have gone on auction block since last June 2014

I was surprised to see so many Adam and Eva’s available at auction in the last year, but one of this quality would have gone thru a private sale since the print would have been stamped with the Bpl collectors mark. Its probably in Russia and since Christies is wholly owned private company, their books not open to public, no access to private sake data without supaoena from U.S. Justice dept or Interpol and not issuable til after audit done. Once again, why so long til auditors called in?

This Durer theft had to have a buyer set up to receive once taken in June and only one with a thorough history and connections and knowledge to plan this all would be Hitchings and how to get it out of there, bypassing all controls. Easiest way would have been to slip between an innocuous book checked out or that book given as a gift that figures in later.

How does a special audit company not get called into to do audit til December 2014! And Glover not be aware? Whose paying the consultants fee? Glover as I said with such a high salary is being protected.

The Rembrandt not found missing til April 15 2015? Nice tax day reward to the inside contact. Then someone given a “bargain” book from Bpl returns it suddenly? Uh to keep from being charged with fed felony grand theft, conspiracy Rico, going to jail.

Trustees don’t get notified!? Til recent? Again who’s paying the bill of the auditors in December, ?they have to be given special permission to access all, they have to be supervised by Bpl staff, no way I’m believing consultants have free rein to traipse among everything, they could steal.

The mayor still doing his Schlick as previously explained

NOW they find rare coins missing? Oooooh, those tourists are now given a treasure hunt to go after, GOLD! Who knows if that real. The tourist greed now activated, they gotta go to scene of crime, to find their own clues for the new treasure hunt. People are nutz

Hitchings the critic, 40 yrs in charge of this stuff and constant contact with staff til present knew all procedures and how to circumvent, to me the prime mastermind suspect

This timeline as reported makes NO sense. Why would the Durer found missing in June NOt trigger immediate involvement of all and noticifations to all in June? There’s no embarrassment in a print being misfiled, happens all the time.

Yet no special auditor til December., who wouldn’t foot the bill? Trustees, mayor, Glover had no authority to pay? Out of their budget? Follow the money trail.

Reporter not asking these questions, pointing them out?dumb art reporter, neither any knowledge of art, or business and heisting of art, these anomalies so glaring, unless the press purposefully being fed disinformation, that common too. Heck, I do it to determine if I think someone a thief or get bad vibe here, only use it rarely, so far on

• April 8 — The library’s chief of collections strategy becomes aware that the Durer print, titled “Adam and Eve,” is missing and may have been missing for several months. The library’s print department staff begins an internal search.

• April 11 — BPL President Amy Ryan is informed about the missing Durer print and notifies Jeffrey Rudman, chairman of the board of trustees.

• April 15 — The print department becomes aware that the Rembrandt, titled “Self-Portrait with Plumed Cap and Lowered Sabre,” is missing. Ryan contacts Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Police Commissioner William B. Evans to inform them that the two prints are missing. The internal review continues and Boston police begin assisting library personnel.

• April 29 — Taking the advice of Boston police, a police report is filed when the prints are not located during the initial internal search. The police department’s anti-corruption unit, which investigates wrongdoing by city officials, is assigned to the case.

• May 19 — News breaks about the missing prints.

• May 20 — The FBI says it is assisting Boston police in its investigation.durer albrecht sex rembrandt art heist renaissance

HILARIOUS AUSTRALIA! EDUCATIONAL MARIJUANA! Give it to kids to stimulate artistic instincts

IS THIS GUY NUTZ? WE ALREADY HAVE A WORLDWIDE DISASTER WITH THE USE OF DRUGS AND THIS GUY WANTS TO GIVE MORE TO KIDS?

Australian multimedia artist and Murdoch University lecturer Leon Ewing has proposed a plan that would provide high school students with controlled doses of marijuana in order to stimulate their creativity.

And he’s not alone in thinking that this controversial idea has potential. Leigh Carmichael, creative director of the Museum of Old and New Art(MONA), where Marina Abramović will exhibit  “art of the immaterial” in June, has expressed curiosity

Ewing’s idea will be expounded upon during a talk at the Tasmanian museum’s annual music and culture festival, Dark Mofu which takes place from June 12–22. Abramović will make an appearance at the event, which boasts “food, drink, music, and general wild abandon”

“We already prescribe amphetamine-like medications to our children for focus and docility. What if we medicated for creativity? Educational marijuana, if you will,” Ewing

BRAVE, CREATIVE AND PROVOCATIVE IDEAS? HARM CHILDREN EVEN MORE THAN BIG PHARMA DOES? HOW MANY MORE STUPID PEOPLE IN THE WORLD SHALL WE HAVE IN THE FUTURE WITH THEIR BRAINS DESTROYED?

His plan includes providing teenagers “controlled and moderated” doses of marijuana, via custom-made vaporizers.

“We don’t necessarily agree with this idea, but we love that it’s brave and creative, and in order for seismic change, we’ll need to think big and be open to provocative ideas.”

THE ONLY BIG QUESTION THAT NEEDS ASKING IS WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO THROW EWING IN THE LOONEY BIN OR CHECK OUT HIS CONNECTION WITH DRUG CARTELS.

Ronnie Voigt, head of Tasmania’s Drug Education Network obviously disagrees with the proposal. “[The idea] doesn’t sit well with anyone who understands child development”.

But it looks like Voigt (and parents everywhere) might be in luck. When asked whether or not he was being facetious, Ewing replied: “Yes and no. In my work as an artist, we need to ask the big questions.”

Ancient “iPad” Uncovered in Byzantine Shipwreck

durer albrecht sex byzantine russians turkey Byzantines Repel Russian Attack, 10th century Byzantine fleet

Turkish archaeologists have discovered what they have dubbed a “Byzantine iPad” in a 9th century shipwreck, reports. The artifact was found on board a vessel dubbed Yenikapı 12 in the once-bustling Byzantine port of Theodosius (now silted over and lying some 985 feet from the water).

The primitive, 1,200-year-old “iPad” only had note-taking and calculating capabilities, and carrying one around would have been like stacking five 7-inch iPads in your hand. This hunk of wood may be a far cry from our modern-day shiny, metal, magic machines, but as a piece of handheld technology it was still way ahead of its time.

Each of the 5 wooden panels are covered in wax for note-taking, as evident by the still-visible Medieval Greek scrawls. This wax is particularly nifty because instead of writing on expensive, one-time-use-only animal-skin parchment or papyrus, a scribe only needed to give the wax a quick rub to reveal a clean slate. And if, say, the information needed be kept, the wax was up to the task—the writing can literally last a thousand years.

Additionally, the bottom panel of the proto-iPad contains a sliding lid revealing a compartment to store weights. It is thought that since the small weights were found on a merchant ship, they were used in valuing payment of metal coinage or the like. It is likely an assay balance, used to determine the metal content in ore or the amount of precious metal in an alloy.

The forerunner to today’s tablet computer isn’t the only astounding find from this ancient port. Ten years ago, to archaeologists’ delight, 37 sunken ships with a phenomenal amount of preserved artifacts were discovered at the site. Many examples of amphorae vases, tableware, coins, candles, figurines, sandals, ropes, pulleys, and anchors were unearthed.

Despite the Yenikapı 12’s advanced age, the vessel retains 60 percent of its organic hull. Archaeologists hope to create a replica of the ship that can sail along its original trade route in the Black Sea, from Crimea to Kersonesos, by 2015. That’s not so long of a wait for a ship that has been stuck in the muck over a millennium.

The machines can’t see the difference between subjective categories that human’s created. If an art historian’s ‘game’ is to put artworks and artists into categories, then the machines are certainly not beating them. If this article is to be believed, the only potential benefit of this project will be lost when the machine’s start getting better at differentiating between artists and styles. But further, categorizing artists and artworks is simply not all an art historian does. Had the author consulted one, he or she may have told them when Mannerism happened, for instance.

Richard H

“It links the mannerist and Renaissance styles, which clearly reflects that fact that mannerism is a form of early Renaissance painting.”

EARLY Renaissance? The Mannerism I’m aware of is a form of LATE Renaissance art.

THIS GUY IS CORRECT, MANNERISM FOLLOWED THE RENAISSANCE. MAYBE IT WAS A TYPO IN THE PUBLISHED PAPER?

UncleAl

Say anything you want about the fine arts.  If you can keep a straight face while babbling syllogisms in haughty prose, you’re in.  One is disappointed if a modern thesis does not contain “nanoparticles” or “correlation function.”

Forests were slaughtered to publish centuries of scholarly analysis of the Sistine Chapel ceiling (1508 – 1512) pre-cleaning (before 1980).  Astounding tales of its sepia subtleties are rife.  Deep analyses of subsidiary figures’ meanings are delicately nuanced.  After the soot was removed, everything was comic book bright.  Post-cleaning added loincloths’ removal (the One True Church painted over the naughty bits) revealed “scholarly analysis” was a bunch of hooey.

C’MON, FORESTS WERE SLAUGHTERED?  IT’S CALLED BOOKS AND PRINTING WHICH WERE THE FIRST INTERNET.  IT’S NOW THE FORESTS ARE BEING SLAUGHTERED, INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION AND WORLDWIDE POLITICAL COLONIZATION.

HOWEVER HIS POINT ABOUT THE FACT THE ART HISTORIANS GO OUT OF THEIR WAY TO IGNORE NAKEDNESS AS PORN AND  IT’S NOT SOME GREAT REVIVALIST MOVEMENT SUCH AS NEO CLASSICISM OR GREEK REVIVAL OR ANALYZE EVERYTHING WITHOUT TAKING SEX INTO CONSIDERATION IS WELL MADE

We have science because a civilization cannot afford to be wrong all the time.  Science is offset by social activism, the charitably funded pursuit of intent.  Their interface is called “ethics,” the neutralization of success by vended fear.

I LOVE THIS OBSERVATION!
